Sensei Jason Bassels
Instructor / Director of the Yume Dapo Dojo (C.M.A.C.)

Jason R Bassels 2nd degree black belt and director of the Yume Dapo Dojo, was introduced to the fighting Arts as a child at the Toronto Central YMCA in 1982 where he was first introduced to Karate and Judo. During his youth, 1986-1989, he trained in Greco-Roman Wrestling and Boxing. He stems from a family of Martial Arts practitioners learned in the arts of Karate, Ju-Jitsu and Kick Boxing. In pursuit of what would become his future profession, he traveled across North America from 1991-1998 driving nearly one million miles visiting 45 states and 7 provinces, as well as various cities and towns in Mexico.

His interest in the Martial Arts led him to Classical Martial Arts Canada in 1997, where he began studying under Sensei W. M. Platt, (Hanshi 9th dan) Chief Instructor of Classical Martial Arts Canada and head director of the Honbu Dojo Canada. With Hanshi Platt's guidance and direction Mr Bassels began teaching at his own school in Port Dalhousie, Ontario in 2003 before establishing his present school in Mississauga, Ontario in 2004. He continues to develop his Martial Arts skills under the guidance of Hanshi Platt and presently the instruction of Sensei P. Williams (Renshi 5th dan), head director of C.M.A.C. Central Toronto (Hasu Dojo) and Sensei M. O'Connell (Renshi 5th dan) of C.M.A.C. High Park dojo, respectively. He has also had the fortune to receive instruction from Sensei Iwami Masayaki 11th Soke of the Niten Ichi Ryu way of Musashi's sword, Japan; Hiroshi Arai 8th dan Jodo, 7th dan Iaido and 5th dan Kendo, Japan; Shuya Furakawa 8th dan Jodo, 7th dan Iado and 5th dan Kendo Japan; Colin Watkin, Menkyo, University of Thailand and Sensei Don Jacobs 9th dan of the Purple Dragon school of Ju-Jitsu in Trinidad. He has also trained with a White crane master at the Fuzhou Wushu Association in China and with the Toaist Monks of the Purple Swollow temple on WuDang Mountain China. He has also had the honour of meeting the patriarch of U.S.A. Go Ju Ryu, Karate-Do, Sensei Peter Urban Hanshi, 10th dan, at several U.S.G.A. invitationals.

His disciplines include: Go Ju Ryu Karate-Do, Daito Ryu Jujitsu, Kobudo, Escrima, Kenjutsu, Iaido and Jo-do as well as the energy formats of Pa Qua, Qi Gong, Tai Chi Chuan and Zen Meditation. He has spent years studying the internal and external benefits of Eastern Medicine. In accordance with his Martial Arts studies he has also attended over 30 seminars, tutorials and lectures at various Universities and Colleges, as well as within the C.M.A.C. organization on subjects from Zen Buddhism to Cosmology.

Recently he traveled to China where he visited over 30 historic sites and Temples in 14 cities between Hong Kong and Beijing. Some of his destinations included: the Ancestral Temple of Chen, the ancestral hall of Confucius's descendants; the former residence of Sun Yat-Sen, an historic figure who politically and socially helped China; the legendary Silk Road, instrumental in the growth of China; the Temple of Heaven and the infamous Forbidden City in Beijing, residence of the former Emperors; as well as the Golden Peak at the summit of WuDang Mountain. This was a challenging climb up through the clouds past the gateways of heaven, on stone steps some of which were nearly vertically inclined. It was here that he was fortunate to have trained Tai Du Kung Fu in the court yard of the 1100 year old temple. Another highlight was walking along the Great Wall of China, where he had the fortune of training on the ancient stone wall. During his stay in Xiamen, Quanzhou and Fuzhou (the city actually credited with the origins of Karate-Do) he had the opportunity to train Dog style Kung Fu with one of the head Masters affiliated with the Wushu Society. It was in Xiamen where he visited the first of two Shaolin Temples. It was here that he spent some time training Southern White Crane Fist Kung Fu, and witnessed the reconstruction of the ancient temple that was mostly destroyed during the Cultural Revolution of the mid-1900's. In the South Putuo Temple he witnessed history in the making, as Classical Martial Arts Canada actually became a part of the Ancient Shaolin Temple. He has also been fortunate to have performed Kata and Jujitsu self defence for the Wushu Academy in Fuzhou China, and demonstrated at the Purple Cloud Temple in WuDang, during a cultural exchange between C.M.A.C. and the Bagua masters and students of the 1100 year old school. In Quanzhou China, toward the end of his stay Sensei Bassels was honoured with a written invitation to return to the Martial Arts historical place to train further in the future.

His travels have led to a unique education which is evident in his understanding and respect of the diverse religious, artistic and healing elements of cultures throughout the world.

Sensei Bassels has competed at various open and invitational competitions in Canada and the U.S., placing 1st and 2nd in nearly all meets. In addition he has been his Sensei's 'uke' (assistant), at the Honbu Dojo (head school) and at multiple seminars and demonstrations held across southern Ontario and Alberta. He has demonstrated his Martial Art skills at fundraisers, public events and professional sports games, some of which include demonstrating for the Japanese delegates in front of Burlington City Hall during the Sound of Music Festival; pre-game demonstrations at the Skydome, and a most memorable solo garden demonstration in the Spanish corridor on the island of Macau in China.

Sensei Bassels plans on returning to China and Tibet in 2007 with his Sensei, and is presently planning a trip to various destinations in Japan.

Training is ongoing always! "The way is in training".
